Melasma, decolourization and treatment

Melasma is an acquired hypermelanosis of body area exposed to sun. It presents as symmetric hyper pigmented macules. The cheeks, the upper lip, the chin and the forehead are the most common locations, for this disorder however it can occasionally occur in other parts of the body which have been exposed to the sun.

Decolourization of Pigment

The dual interference of the hyperpigmentation process leads to complete decolorization of the pigment. The retardation effect of 4-n-Butyl Resorcinol on the melanin production is stronger than hydrochinin and five times that of kojic acid. The melanin production takes place during the 28 days cycle.

The effect of 4-n-Butyl resorcinol application is approximately four weeks i.e. after the end of a skin renewal cycle. The skin compatibility is well classified both under clinical tests and in practical applications.

Treatment

Treatment with 4-n-Butyl Resorcinol is a two stage process. First the cream is laid on the affected area over approximately eight weeks, twice a day. In the second stage the cream is used once daily, to prevent new hyper pigmentation. The amount of the resorcinol derivatives is in the range of 0.1 to10 by weight% of the total amount of a cosmetic composition.
